Stockport Youngsters Look Ahead To Wembley Trip After Vertu Trophy Surprise

A team of youngsters from Stockport will have the opportunity to cheer on their local side at Wembley Stadium after being surprised with tickets to attend the upcoming Vertu Trophy Final.

The U11 Girls from Spurley Hey FC, which operates teams for players of all ages, were taking part in a regular training session when two key players from League One side Stockport County – midfielder Jack Diamondand forward Joseph Olowu – dropped in to pay a visit.

The visit was organised by Vertu, the fourth largest automotive retailer in the UK, as part of its ongoing partnership with the English Football League (EFL), which includes title sponsorship of the Vertu Trophy.

Ahead of the final of the competition, in which Stockport will face League One rivals Luton Town, the two players took time to answer questions from the youngsters and share advice on preparing for a big game.

They then broke the news that Spurley Hey will be present at Wembley as Stockport County chase a first Vertu Trophy success, with Vertu donating tickets for the team to attend the match on 12 April.

Hannah Hewitt, Manager of the Spurley Hey U11 Girls team, said: “These girls come out to play football because they love it, and they certainly didn’t expect to be surprised with the chance to go and watch a big game at Wembley.

“This is an amazing gesture by Vertu and is the stuff of dreams for our team. For them, the aim is to try to get to the top of the women’s game, and it could be them walking out at Wembley in ten years’ time.

“Generally the only time we keep them quiet is when they are at the football but I think there is no chance of that this time around – they’ll be proper giddy kippers!

“Fingers crossed we’ll be able to celebrate a victory for Stockport County, and I’m going for a 3-1 win.”

Robert Forrester, Chief Executive of Vertu, said: “Engaging with communities across the country has been key to our partnership with the EFL, and we are delighted to provide Spurley Hey with the opportunity to attend the Vertu Trophy Final.

“I’m sure it will be a memorable experience for the team that will further fuel their dreams of one day walking out onto the Wembley pitch themselves as players.”
