Taxi Drivers Turn To Used Vehicles As Cost Pressures Reshape The Trade

Taxi and private hire drivers across the UK are increasingly opting for used vehicles as rising costs force operators to rethink how they operate their businesses, according to new data from The Taxi Centre.

The business has reported a significant shift in customer behaviour over the past year, with visits to used vehicle pages increasing by more than a third, and enquiries for pre-owned models more than doubling.

The figures highlight the growing financial pressures across the sector, with drivers facing higher vehicle costs, increased insurance premiums, rising day-to-day running costs and greater competition for fares.

To combat the cost-of-living pressures affecting the wider UK economy, many drivers are now looking towards nearly-new or approved used models as a more cost-effective way to upgrade their car without impacting either licensing requirements or professional standards.

The trend has prompted The Taxi Centre to expand its focus on nearly-new and used vehicles, creating a dedicated range aimed at helping drivers to reduce upfront costs without sacrificing reliability or passenger comfort.

Despite the move towards used vehicles, customers are unlikely to notice a difference, with many nearly-new models – such as the popular Toyota Corolla Touring Sports - offering the same levels of comfort, safety and technology as a new car straight off the production line.

The Taxi Centre, which has supplied vehicles to the trade for more than 25 years, says the strongest demand is coming from drivers seeking practical, reliable vehicles with lower ownership costs and proven durability.

By utilising stock from parent company Vertu's network of almost 200 dealerships, The Taxi Centre is now able to offer drivers access to a wider selection of approved used vehicles, supported by nationwide delivery and guidance tailored to local licensing requirements.

Stephen Porter, Branch Manager at The Taxi Centre, said: "What we're seeing is a significant change in buying behaviour amongst professional drivers.

"Historically, many drivers would automatically look at purchasing a new vehicle, but increasingly they are asking whether a carefully selected, high-quality used vehicle makes more financial sense for their business.

"The volume of enquiries we're receiving shows that affordability has become a major consideration. Professional drivers are making commercial decisions about how best to invest their money in a challenging economic environment.

“Drivers are looking for ways to manage costs while still providing a professional service and meeting the expectations of passengers and licensing authorities.”
